In 1972, his Poseidon Adventure launched the entire 'Disaster Films" genre that is a symbol of 70's films. Although the 'Master of Disaster' single-handedly reinvigorated the motion picture industry, his only Oscar was won for his 1953 documentary The Sea Around Us (Towering Inferno was nominated for Best Picture, but lost to Godfather II in 1974).
